Future Fleet Management and Telematics Solutions to Require More Robust Connectivity Solutions

Availability, bandwidth and latency must flex to support a surge in video-based telematics and growing reliance on commercial EVs

(LONDON, September 12, 2024) – As the fleet telematics industry evolves, supporting networking technology is facing new demands while fleet managers are running into new hurdles, according to a new report from global technology intelligence firm ABI Research. The report, The Future of Fleet Management: Expanding Use Cases and Connectivity Requirements, commissioned by floLIVE, cites data from original and third-party research to outline key use cases and their implications on connectivity service providers.

“Fleet managers in the future will require a completely different type of network and connectivity service provider, one that can offer a range of highly available networks and a connectivity management platform designed for advanced IoT applications,” according to the report. “Local connectivity on a global scale is going to be a boon for the demands of low latency, battery-optimized connectivity that meets rising regulatory requirements of data sovereignty, privacy, and roaming restrictions.”

The earliest telematics use cases are approaching their twenty-fifth birthday. As they progress, fleet managers, drivers, and brokers — particularly in international and/or intermodal transport — have become painfully familiar with issues arising from roaming, legacy platforms, multi-provider, and logistically cumbersome approaches, all of which detract from success and create unnecessary complexities.

In the meantime, governments around the world are implementing regulations that render legacy connectivity solutions non-compliant – sometimes expensively so.

“In order to fully achieve the cost-saving, safety, and environmental upside of emerging and future telematics applications, operators should carefully review their connectivity services to future proof their operations,” says Dan Shey, Vice President, Enabling Platforms, at ABI Research.

“We commissioned this study to better understand the developing need in the telematics community in order to serve our customer better,” said Nir Shalom, CEO of floLIVE. “We feel we are uniquely positioned to serve this market today, and continue to invest in our core network and technology stack in order to become the go-to partner for the global telematics community now and well into the future.”
